Where Did the Energy Go?

Kavi's torch 🔦 glows bright, then slowly fades. "Oh no — did my energy just disappear?" Kavi taps a wing on the battery. "No! Energy can never be made from nothing, and it can never be destroyed. It only changes form — the chemical energy in my battery became electricity, then light, then a little warmth that spread into the air." Kavi's eyes shine. "Follow the energy with me — I'll show you it is always, always still there!"

What your child will learn

1What energy can do — and can'tEnergy follows one grand rule. Tap each card to see what energy can and cannot do.

2Stored up, or on the move?Stored energy is waiting to be used — like chemical energy in a battery or height energy in a raised object. Energy on the move is being carried right now — movement, light, sound, heat or electricity. Tap the right box!

3Follow the energy changeGood scientists predict, then test. Pick your guess for each energy change, then tap to check. Tap Next test for more.

4A swing swaps its energy over and overWatch the energy swap between a stored form and a moving form, again and again. Tap each stage.

A peek inside

Kavi switches on a torch 🔦 in a dark room and a beam of light shines out. Where did that light energy come from?

A torch does not make energy from nothing. The battery holds chemical energy. When Kavi switches it on, that chemical energy flows out as electrical energy, and the bulb changes it into light (and a little heat).

Try this at home: Finish the rule: energy is never created or ____.
