Investigate: Cells and Microbes

Measure it again and again, add up your readings and find the average, then say only what your numbers really show — investigate cells and microbes the way a real scientist does!

I can take repeated measurements, find the average, and draw a conclusion my data supports.

Kavi at the Microscope

Kavi leans over the microscope and peers at a wafer-thin sliver of onion skin 🧅🔬. “Look — tiny boxes, all in neat rows! Those are cells, the little building blocks of every living thing.” Then Kavi lifts a sealed dish of fuzzy bread mould. “Even this mould is a tiny living thing — a microorganism — and it is built of cells too.” Kavi picks up a ruler. “But how BIG is each cell, and how fast does the mould grow? One quick look could fool me. So a real scientist measures again and again, adds the readings up and finds the average — the typical value — then says only what the numbers truly show. That is how we draw a conclusion we can trust. Let's try it!”

What your child will learn

1Measure, average, concludeA careful scientist never trusts a single reading. Tap each part to see the three-step habit that makes an answer trustworthy.
2Why four readings, not one?
3Average, odd reading, conclusionThink like a scientist. Answer each one, then tap Next test → for more!
4Supported, or going too far?A conclusion must stay inside the data. Here are Kavi's readings of a mould patch: 8 mm, then 10 mm, then 12 mm.

A peek inside

I counted the cells across the microscope view three times and got 6, 7 and 8. What is the average number of cells?
To find the average I add all my readings, then divide by how many I took. 6 + 7 + 8 = 21. I took 3 readings, so 21 ÷ 3 = 7.

Try this at home: Why do scientists measure the same thing more than once?
