Investigate: Variation and Inheritance

No two seeds — or two children — are exactly alike. Measure many, add your readings and divide to find the average, then draw only the conclusion your data can really back up.

Kavi's Seed and Eye Survey

Kavi tips a packet of bean seeds onto the bench 🌱 and looks around the class. "Look — no two seeds are the same size, and no two of you have exactly the same eyes! That is natural variation, and many traits are inherited from our parents," hoots Kavi. "To study something that varies, here is the scientist's secret: I never trust just one measurement. I measure again and again, add my readings and divide to find the average, then draw only the conclusion my data supports. Let's investigate variation like real scientists!"

What your child will learn

1Variation and inheritanceLook around your class — no two people are exactly the same. Tap each card to see what natural variation is, where traits come from, and how a scientist measures something that varies.
2Measure many, then averageKavi measured five bean seeds. No two were the same — they varied from 18 to 22 mm. One seed is not enough, so Kavi adds all five lengths and divides by five to find the typical length. 18 + 22 + 20 + 19 + 21 = 100, and 100 ÷ 5 = 20 mm.
3Which conclusion does the data support?A good conclusion says only what your readings actually show — never more. Kavi's seeds averaged about 20 mm.

A peek inside

I measured three sunflower seeds: 14 mm, 18 mm and 22 mm. What is the average length?
To find the average I add every reading, then divide by how many readings there are. 14 + 18 + 22 = 54. There are 3 readings, so 54 ÷ 3 = 18.

Try this at home: Why does a scientist measure something that varies more than once?
