Kavi Looks Back

Kavi flips through a thick, dog-eared science journal 📒. "Look how far we've climbed this term! We learned which changes we can undo and which make a brand-new substance 🔄, hunted down the forms of energy ⚡ and their sources, watched light and sound travel as waves 〰️ that reflect and refract, wired bulbs into series and parallel circuits 🔌 and met current and voltage, zoomed right into a living cell 🔬 and built it up into a whole body, and learned how our actions can harm or protect the living world 🌍." He straightens his glasses. "That's a lot of big ideas — let's connect them into one picture, then pass the checkpoint together. Next stop: secondary science!"

What your child will learn

1This term's big ideasWe built a whole term of science! Tap each big idea to bring it back — notice how they connect to each other.
2Series circuit or parallel circuit?Same battery, same two bulbs — but two ways to wire them, with very different results. Tap each card to compare.
3Use the whole termEach question pulls on a different big idea from this term. Predict, then tap to check. Tap Next test for more.
4The engineering design cycleOne of the term's big ideas was a true loop — an engineer keeps going round, improving the design until it works. Follow it — tap each step.

A peek inside

Kavi fries an egg in a hot pan 🍳 — the clear, runny white turns solid and white. Using what we learned about changes, is this a reversible change or a new substance, and how can you tell?
Ask the key question: is it still the same stuff, or has something new been made? The runny egg white has turned solid and white, and it will not go back no matter how it cools. A change you cannot undo like this has made a new substance.

Try this at home: What is the difference between a reversible change and a change that makes a new substance?
