Investigate: Adaptations for a Habitat
A beak's shape is a tool for its food, and a leaf's shape and covering suit its habitat — change one thing, keep the rest the same, and read the pattern in your results!

Kavi Tests a Beak
Kavi looks at birds and sees that every beak is a different shape — a hooked one, a thin one, a wide one. "Is a beak's shape an adaptation that suits the food it must handle?" hoots Kavi. To find out the fair way, Kavi uses kitchen tools as pretend beaks and times how many seeds each one picks up. "I change just ONE thing — the beak's shape — and keep everything else the SAME: same seeds, same number, same time, same bowl. The one thing I change is my variable. Then I count, and read the pattern in my data — just like a real scientist!"
