Kavi's Tadpole Lab

Kavi lines up three tanks of frog tadpoles 🐸 on three different shelves. "I want to find out — does WARMER water help tadpoles grow their back legs sooner?" hoots Kavi. "To find out the fair way, I change just ONE thing — how warm the water is — and keep everything else the SAME: same tadpoles, same food, same light. Then I count how many grow back legs and read the pattern in my data. The one thing I change is my variable. That is how a real scientist investigates a life cycle — let's try it!"

What your child will learn

1What makes a test fair?A scientist wants to know what ONE thing does to a growing animal. So they change that one thing and keep everything else the same. Tap each part to see how a fair test works!
2Which do you change, which do you keep the same?In a fair test you change ONE variable and keep every other thing the same. Try it on Sam's tadpole investigation.
3Read the pattern in the dataWe put the same kind of tadpole in three tanks and changed only how warm the water was. Then we counted how many grew their back legs. Read the bars from left to right — the warmer the water, the more tadpoles grew legs. That trend is the pattern in our data.
4Is it a fair test?Decide like a scientist. Predict each one, then tap Next test → for more!

A peek inside

I want to find out if WARMER water helps tadpoles grow their back legs sooner. What is the ONE thing I should change?
A fair test changes only the one thing I am testing. Here I am testing warmth, so I change how warm the water is and keep everything else — the tadpoles, the food, the light — the same.

Try this at home: In a fair test, how many things should you change at one time?
