Kavi Chases a Rainbow

Kavi flicks off the lamp 💡 and the room goes black. "Where did my red ball go? It's still right here — I just can't see it!" Kavi switches the light back on. "Light bounces off things and into my eyes — that is how seeing works!" Then a sunbeam hits a glass prism and a rainbow 🌈 spills across the wall. "Whoa — plain white light was hiding every colour! Come and discover how light and colour work with me!"

What your child will learn

1The journey of lightWe can only see a thing when light travels from a source, bounces off the thing, and lands in our eyes. Tap each step of the journey!
2Makes its own light, or lit up?A luminous object makes its own light. A non-luminous object makes none — we see it only by the light it reflects. Tap the right box!
3Why does the apple look red?White light carries every colour mixed together. An object looks the colour it reflects back to your eyes — it absorbs (soaks up) the rest. Tap each card!
4Guess first, then check!Good scientists predict, then test. Pick your guess, then tap to check! Tap Next test for more.

A peek inside

Kavi looks up at the Moon 🌙 glowing at night. The Moon is not a lamp or a flame — so how can we see it shining?
The Moon makes no light of its own. Sunlight travels across space, reflects off the Moon, and that reflected light reaches our eyes.

Try this at home: Name one object that makes its own light (luminous).
