Kavi the Fair-Test Scientist

Kavi takes a big crunchy bite of apple 🍎. "My teeth chew it into tiny pieces, then my churning stomach mashes it into mush!" Then Kavi wonders: "Do small pieces break apart faster than a whole one?" To find out, Kavi must be fair — change only one thing (the piece size), keep everything else the same, measure the time, and look for a pattern. Let's investigate the digestive journey!

What your child will learn

1Where does a bite of food go?Food takes an amazing journey through your body. Tap each part to see what it does.
2The three parts of a fair testA variable is a thing that can change. In a FAIR test you change just one variable, keep the rest the same, then measure. Tap a card.
3Plan our digestion fair testWe drop a whole, a chopped and a crushed piece into three cups of water (our pretend stomach juice). Predict, then tap to check. Tap Next test for more.
4Our dissolving-time chartWe timed how long each piece took to break apart in the water. The taller the bar, the longer it took. Look for a pattern!

A peek inside

Kavi sets up three cups with the same water: a whole piece, a chopped piece and a crushed piece. What is the ONE thing Kavi is changing?
Everything is the same — the water, the food, the cup — except one thing: the size of the pieces. That is the variable Kavi changes.

Try this at home: In a fair test, how many things do you change at one time?
