Kavi's Seed Lab

Kavi tapes a row of little cups to the sunny windowsill, each one holding a bean seed 🌱. "I want to find out — does MORE WATER help seeds sprout?" hoots Kavi. "To find out the fair way, I change just ONE thing — the water — and keep everything else the SAME: same seeds, same warmth, same light. Then I count the sprouts and read the pattern in my data. The one thing I change is my variable. That is how a real scientist investigates — let's try it!"

What your child will learn

1What makes a test fair?A scientist wants to know what ONE thing does. So they change that one thing and keep everything else the same. Tap each part to see how a fair test works!
2Which do you change, which do you keep the same?In a fair test you change ONE variable and keep every other thing the same. Try it on Mia's investigation.
3Read the pattern in the dataMia counted the sprouts in each cup and drew a bar for each. Read the bars from left to right — the cup with more water grew more sprouts. That trend is the pattern in her data.
4Is it a fair test?Decide like a scientist. Predict each one, then tap Next test → for more!

A peek inside

I want to find out if seeds sprout faster in a WARM place. What is the ONE thing I should change?
A fair test changes only the one thing I am testing. Here I am testing warmth, so I change how warm the place is and keep everything else — the seeds, the water, the light — the same.

Try this at home: In a fair test, how many things should you change at one time?
