Showing Data

A table keeps the exact numbers, a bar graph compares groups, and a line graph tracks change over time — and the question you ask decides which enquiry to run.

Kavi Turns Numbers into Pictures

Kavi spreads a messy pile of measurements across the lab bench 📋. "A heap of numbers is hard to read — so a scientist organises them. First into a table, with a row for each thing. Then into a picture: a bar graph to compare separate groups, or a line graph when something changes over time. And before any of that, I pick the right kind of enquiry for my question! Come turn these numbers into something we can actually read."

What your child will learn

1Four ways to show your dataScientists pick the display that makes their data easiest to read. Tap each one!
2Minibeasts counted in four garden spotsClass 5 counted the minibeasts in four spots. Each spot gets its own bar, and a taller bar means more minibeasts. Read the bars, then look for the pattern.
3Which graph fits this data?Separate groups → a bar graph. One thing changing over time → a line graph. Read each case, then tap the best graph. Tap Next test for more.
4Which kind of enquiry answers the question? Before you collect data, choose the right enquiry. A fair test changes one thing and compares. Observing over time watches one thing change. Sort each question into the right box.

A peek inside

A bar graph shows robins 12, sparrows 7, pigeons 15, crows 4. Which bird was seen the most?
I compare the bar heights. The tallest bar is pigeons at 15, which is more than 12, 7 and 4. So pigeons were seen the most.

Try this at home: In a table, what do we call the lines that go across?
