Kavi Follows a Bite of Food

Kavi takes a big crunchy bite of apple 🍎 and suddenly wonders, "Where does it GO?" So Kavi follows the food on an amazing journey! "First my teeth chew it and my spit softens it. Then it slides down my food pipe into my churning stomach, and on through my long, winding intestines. Along the way my body breaks the food apart and soaks out the goodness — the energy and building bits that let me run, think, and grow! 🌱 Come follow a bite of food through you!"

A peek inside

Kavi takes a bite of apple and chews it. Name two things that happen in the mouth to start digesting the food.
Digestion starts in the mouth. The teeth chew the food into tiny pieces, and the spit (saliva) mixes in and begins to break the food down.

Try this at home: Name the parts food travels through, in order.
