Kavi's Thirsty Celery

Kavi stands a crunchy celery stalk 🥬 in a jar of water and drips in some red food colour 🎨. "A stem is like a bundle of tiny drinking straws," hoots Kavi. "It carries water up from the bottom all the way to the leaves 🍃. But I can't see water move… so I added colour to follow it! Tomorrow the red will have climbed up the stem. A real scientist does one more thing — we grab a ruler 📏, measure how high it rose, and record it on a chart. Let's investigate!"

What your child will learn

1What's in our celery investigationWe stood a celery stem in coloured water. Tap each part to see what it does in the journey.
2Which tool for the job?A scientist picks the RIGHT tool to measure each thing. Tap the tool that measures each one!
3Chart how high the colour climbedEach day we measured the red colour with a ruler and drew a bar. The taller the bar, the higher the colour had climbed up the stem. A bar chart lets anyone read our results in a flash!
4Predict, then recordUse what you know about the stem and your tools. Predict each one, then tap Next test → for more!

A peek inside

I leave a celery stem in red water overnight. The next day the LEAVES have turned red! What carried the colour all the way up to the leaves?
A stem is full of tiny tubes that carry water up from the bottom to the leaves, so the colour rode up the stem.

Try this at home: Which part of the plant carries water up to the leaves?
