Kavi's Lunch Lab

Kavi ties on a little apron 🧑‍🍳 and sets an empty plate 🍽️ on the bench. "A balanced plate has a bit of everything — crunchy vegetables 🥦, filling grains 🍞, strong-building protein 🥚, and sweet fruit 🍎," hoots Kavi. "But how do I know my plate is balanced? I sort each food into its group, then I measure and record the counts on a chart — just like a real scientist. Come on, let's investigate!"

What your child will learn

1The four food groups on a plateA balanced plate has food from four groups. Each group helps your body in its own way. Tap each one to find out its job!
2Which food group?Look at each food and decide its group. Does it grow in the ground as a veg, fill you with energy, build your muscles, or taste sweet as fruit? Tap the right box!
3Chart our plateAfter we sort, we count each group and draw a bar. The taller the bar, the more foods from that group on our plate. A bar chart lets anyone read our plate in a flash!
4Pick a tool, then recordA scientist measures with the right tool and records what they find. Predict each one, then tap Next test → for more!

A peek inside

I pick up a carrot 🥕 for my plate. It is a crunchy plant we eat. Which food group does it go in?
Crunchy plants like carrots and broccoli are vegetables, so the carrot goes in the vegetables group.

Try this at home: Which food group do carrots and broccoli belong to?
