Investigate: Separating Mixtures
Catch sand with a sieve, pull salt back from water by evaporating — then measure and record what you collect!

I can measure with a tool and record my results in a table or bar chart.

📖
Kavi's Mixture Lab
Kavi stirs sand into a jar of water 🏖️ and salt into another 🧂. "Uh oh — now they're all mixed up!" hoots Kavi, grabbing a sieve and a dish. "But scientists can separate them again. The sand I can catch in a sieve. The salt dissolved, so I'll let the water evaporate and the salt will be left behind. Then I'll measure what I collect and record it in a chart. Let's investigate!"

What your child will learn
1Two ways to separate a mixtureA mixture has two things jumbled together. Here is how a scientist pulls them apart and writes down what they find. Tap each one!
2Sieve or evaporate?Which way should you use? It depends on the mixture. Tap each card.
3What will happen?Use what you know, then tap to check. Tap Next test → for more!
4Record what we collectedWe separated three mixtures, weighed each pile on a scale ⚖️, and drew a bar for each. The taller the bar, the more we collected. This is our record!

A peek inside
Kavi has a jar of sandy water 🏖️. Which tool separates the sand from the water?
The sand bits are big and do not dissolve, so I pour the mixture through a sieve — the sand stays in and the water drips through.
