Engineering Solutions

Real engineers solve problems inside limits — then test, and decide: improve it, or leave it as it is?

I can design a solution within limits, then use a test result to decide whether to improve it or leave it.

Kavi's Ramp Car Challenge

Kavi reads the challenge card 🎴. "Build a car that rolls down the ramp without tipping — using only card and straws, no wider than 10 cm." Those are the limits 📏. Kavi builds one, rolls it… and it tips over! 🚗💥 "A real engineer doesn't give up," hoots Kavi. "I'll change one thing and test again. But if it passes — I'll leave it be!"

What your child will learn

1Engineers design within limitsA design challenge sets rules called limits. Your solution must do its job AND stay inside every limit. Tap each one.
2Inside the limits, or breaks one?The challenge: build it from ONLY paper and tape, and keep it under 30 cm. Tap where each design belongs.
3Improve it, or leave it as it is?After a test, an engineer decides. If it meets the goal and every limit, leave it. If not, improve one thing. Predict, then tap to check! Tap Next test for more.
4Why the improved car stops tippingKavi changed ONE thing after the test. Tap each card to see the before and after.

A peek inside

A challenge gives Kavi a goal and some limits: build a car that rolls down the ramp without tipping, using only card and straws. Kavi tested it and it tipped over. Improve it, or leave it?
The goal was to roll without tipping. The test shows it failed the goal, so it is not finished.

Try this at home: Engineers design within limits. Name TWO kinds of limit a challenge might set.
