Heat and Temperature
How hot? How cold? Learn to measure heat — and watch it move, flow and stretch things!
✦ Science📘 Stage 4 · S4⏱ ~11 min🧒 Ages 8–9★ Free to start
measure temperature, and explain heat gain and loss, conductors and insulators, and expansion and contraction.

📖
Kavi the Heat Detective
Kavi holds up a thermometer 🌡️ like a magnifying glass. "How hot is my cocoa? How cold is the ice?" A metal spoon in the soup turns hot 🥄, but the wooden one stays cool 🥢. "Heat is sneaky — it moves, it flows from hot to cold, and it even makes things stretch bigger! Come be a heat detective with me!"

What your child will learn
1Meet the thermometerTemperature tells us how hot or cold something is. We measure it with a thermometer. Tap each part to see its job!
2Conductor or insulator?A conductor lets heat pass through it quickly — most metals do. An insulator slows heat down and keeps it in. Tap the right box!
3Heat loss and heat gainHeat always moves from a hotter thing to a cooler thing. So hot things cool down, and cold things warm up. Tap each card!
4Guess first, then check!Good scientists predict, then test. Pick your guess, then tap to check! Tap Next test for more.

A peek inside
Kavi stirs hot soup with a metal spoon 🥄 and the handle turns hot too. Why does the metal get hot?
Metal is a conductor, so heat passes through it quickly — from the soup, all the way up the spoon.
