Kavi's State Lab

Kavi pulls on tiny lab goggles 🥽 and lines up three things on the bench: an ice cube 🧊, a cup of water 💧, and a balloon 🎈 puffed full of air. "Every thing is a solid, a liquid, or a gas," hoots Kavi. "But how do we know which? We test it! Does it hold its shape? Does it pour? Does it fill all the space? Then a real scientist does one more thing — we measure and record what we found on a chart. Let's investigate!"

What your child will learn

1The three states of matterEverything around you is a solid, a liquid, or a gas. Each one behaves in its own way. Tap each to find out how to spot it!
2Solid, liquid or gas?Run the test on each thing. Does it hold its shape, pour, or fill the space? Tap the right box!
3Chart our resultsAfter we sort, we count each group and draw a bar. The taller the bar, the more things we found in that state. A bar chart lets anyone read our results in a flash!
4Pick a tool, then recordA scientist measures with the right tool and records what they find. Predict each one, then tap Next test → for more!

A peek inside

I test a rock 🪨. I hold it and move it between my hands — it keeps the same shape. Which state is it?
A thing that holds its own shape is a solid, so the rock is a solid.

Try this at home: Does a solid hold its own shape when you pick it up?
