Kavi's Rainy-Day Problem
Rain is coming, and Kavi needs a coat! "But which material suits the job?" hoots Kavi. "A coat must be waterproof. A shelf must be strong. A blanket must be warm." A scientist makes a plan, tests each material, records what happens with a tally or a drawing — then picks the best one for the job!

What your child will learn
1The job tells us the testEvery job needs a material with the right property. Tap each job to see what we test for.
2Will this material suit the job?A scientist predicts first, then tests. Pick your guess — then see what the test shows!
3Our tally of waterproof testsWe poured water on 4 materials and kept a tally — one mark for each. The taller the stack, the more water that soaked in. Reading our record tells us what happened.
4Pick the material that suits bestA scientist's conclusion: read the record, then choose the material whose property fits the job. Tap each card.

A peek inside
We need a raincoat ☔. Test plastic 🥤 or cotton 🧦 — which suits best?
Plan: pour water on each. Observe: the water runs off the plastic but soaks into the cotton. Record: cotton gets 4 tally marks, plastic gets 0. Conclude: plastic suits best.
Try this at home: A raincoat must keep water out. Which suits best: plastic or paper?
