Kavi and the Mystery Bag 🎲

Kavi shook a bag of marbles and a die rattled on the table. "Probability is just counting fairly," hooted Kavi. "Count the outcomes you want, count all the equally likely outcomes, and write one over the other. 0 means it can never happen, 1 means it always does, and 1/2 is a fifty-fifty even chance. Count fairly and the chance gives itself up!"

What your child will learn

1Probability = outcomes you want ÷ all outcomesThe probability of a simple event is how likely it is to happen, written as a fraction: the number of favourable outcomes (the ones you want) over the total number of equally likely outcomes. Tap each line to hear it.
2A spinner shows probability as a fractionThis spinner has 6 equal sections and 3 are teal. Landing on teal is 3 out of 6. Tap the sections — the fraction appears below.
3Every probability sits from 0 to 1A probability is always a number from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). We also use words — impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely, certain — to say where an event sits. Tap each line to hear it.
4One smart move for each questionEach probability question has a smart move. Match the question to the move, then count carefully.

A peek inside

A fair die is rolled. What is the probability of rolling a 5?
favourable ÷ total: one 5, out of 6 equal faces

Try this at home: A coin is flipped. What is the probability it lands on tails? __
