Kavi Goes Shopping and Saving 🛍️

Kavi spots 25% OFF on a cosy scarf, then sees tax added at the till, then spies a bank poster promising 5% a year on savings 🏦. "Money is just percentages in action," she hoots. "A discount takes a slice off, a tax adds a slice on, and simple interest adds the same slice every year. Learn the three and I can tell exactly what I'll pay, save or owe ⚡."

What your child will learn

1Take a slice off, or add a slice onA discount takes a percentage off, so you keep the rest. A tax adds a percentage on, so you pay more than 100%. Both are a single multiply — find the multiplier and do one sum.
2Simple interest: the same slice every yearWhen you save or borrow money, the bank adds interest. With simple interest the same amount is added each year, worked out from the starting money only. Use one formula.
3Simple interest grows in equal steps

A peek inside

A $80 coat has 25% off. What is the sale price?
keep 100% − 25% = 75% = ×0.75, so 80 × 0.75

Try this at home: A $40 book has 10% off. Sale price? __
