Construct a pie chart by turning each part into a fraction of 360°

Turn data into a circle: write each part as a fraction of the whole, multiply that fraction by 360° to get its slice angle, then draw and label every sector — and check the angles add up to a full 360°.

Kavi's Pizza-Slice Chart 🥧

Kavi wanted to show the whole class's favourite fruits in ONE picture — a circle cut into slices! "A pie chart turns each group into a slice of the circle," hooted Kavi. "First I write the group as a fraction of the whole, then I turn that fraction into a share of 360° — because a full circle is 360°. Bigger group, bigger slice. And every slice together makes one whole turn!"

What your child will learn

1Turn each part into a slice of 360°A full circle is 360°. To construct a pie chart, give every group a slice whose size matches its share. Three steps for each group: write it as a fraction of the whole, multiply that fraction by 360° to get the slice's angle, then draw the sector with a protractor and label it. Tap each line to hear it.
2A quarter of the circle is 90°Here is a circle split into 4 equal sectors. Each equal sector is 360° ÷ 4 = 90°, so one shaded quarter is 1/4 of 360° = 90°. Tap the sectors — the more you shade, the bigger the angle: 2 sectors = 180°, 3 sectors = 270°, all 4 = 360°.
3Common slices to know by heartLearn these core slices — then any part is quick to turn into an angle. Tap a row to hear it.
4Build every slice, then check 360°A survey of 20 pets: dogs 10, cats 5, fish 3, birds 2. Turn each group into its slice angle — each pet is worth 360 ÷ 20 = 18°. Tap each line.

A peek inside

In a survey of 24 children, 6 chose football. What angle is the football sector on the pie chart?
6/24 = 1/4, then 1/4 × 360°

Try this at home: A pie chart shows 40 pets; dogs are 20 of them. What angle is the dog sector? (part/40 × 360) __
