Reason about angles in shapes and around a point

Angles follow rules you can count on: along a straight line they total 180°, all the way around a point they fill a whole turn of 360°, and the three corners of any triangle add to 180° (a four-sided shape, 360°). Know the rule and you can always find a missing angle.

Kavi and the Star-Fruit Slices 🌟

Kavi tilts its head at a slice of star-fruit on the branch. "Look how the cuts meet in the middle!" it hoots. "Angles are everywhere — and they obey rules. Lay them along a straight line and they always total 180°. Fit them all the way around a point and they fill one whole turn — 360°. The three corners of any triangle add to 180°, and a four-sided shape to 360°. Learn the rule, and a missing angle can never hide from you!"

What your child will learn

1How big is the angle?Every angle is measured in degrees (°). We name it by its size. Tap each one to see its range — and remember the three anchor sizes: a right angle is 90°, a straight angle is 180°, and a full turn is 360°.
2Does it add up to 180° or 360°?
3The two moves that find any missing angleAlmost every angle puzzle uses one of two totals. Tap each card to see how.

A peek inside

Two angles sit next to each other on a straight line. One of them is 115°. How big is the other angle?
angles on a straight line add to 180°, so the other is 180 − 115 = 65

Try this at home: What do angles on a straight line always add up to?
