Kavi Shares the Harvest 🌾

The barn has 864 acorns to pack into trays that hold 24 each. "Too many to share in my head!" Kavi hoots. "When the group size is a 2-digit number, I use long division — estimate, multiply, subtract, bring down, and repeat ⚡. And if some acorns are left over, that leftover is the remainder — I just have to decide what it means."

What your child will learn

1Divide → Multiply → Subtract → Bring down → repeatLong division is one short loop you run again and again. Take 868 ÷ 28. Look at the first part of 868 that 28 fits into — that is 86. Divide: 28 fits into 86 three times. Multiply: 28 × 3 = 84. Subtract: 86 − 84 = 2. Bring down the next digit (8) to make 28. Now run the loop again: 28 ÷ 28 = 1, nothing left over.

A peek inside

Use long division: 864 ÷ 24.
24 into 86 → 3 (24 × 3 = 72), left 14; bring down 4 → 144; 24 into 144 → 6 (24 × 6 = 144), left 0

Try this at home: Divide (it goes exactly): 756 ÷ 21 = __
