Kavi's Hundred Square 💯
"Per-cent means out of 100," hoots Kavi, holding up a square cut into 100 tiny tiles. "So 50% is 50 tiles out of 100 — that's half. And 10% is 10 tiles — one tenth. Once I can find 10% and 50%, I can build up to any percent: 30% is just three 10%s! 💯"

1A whole is 100% — ten equal partsA whole thing is 100% — that means 100 out of 100. Split the whole bar into 10 equal parts. Each part is 10 out of 100, which we write 10%. Tap parts to shade them: one part is 10%, five parts is 50%.
210% → divide by 10 · 50% → halveTwo percents are so friendly you can do them in your head. 10% of a quantity: just divide by 10. 50% of a quantity: just halve it. Tap each card.
3Build any percent from 10%To find a percent that is NOT 10% or 50%, build it up from pieces you know. First find 10%, then stack it. 10% of 40 is 4, so 20% = 4 + 4 = 8 and 30% = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. For 5%, take half of 10%. For 25%, take half of 50%.
