Kavi Measures the Tent and the Toy Box 🏕️
Kavi is making a triangle tent flap and filling a square toy box 🏕️. "Two shapes, two different jobs," hoots Kavi. "The flat triangle has an area — it is half of its rectangle, so (base × height) ÷ 2, in square units. The solid box has a volume — stacks of unit cubes, so length × width × height, in cubic units."

What your child will learn
1Area is flat space; volume is space filledThese two measurements answer different questions. Tap each card to see its job.
2A triangle is HALF of its rectangleAny triangle fits exactly inside a rectangle that is base wide and height tall. The triangle covers half of it, so area = (base × height) ÷ 2. Tap each part.
3A box is layers of unit cubesFill a cuboid with 1 cm unit cubes. One layer is length × width cubes; stack it height layers high. So volume = length × width × height. Tap each part.
4Triangle ÷ 2, box × 3 edgesSame idea — measure the space — but a flat triangle and a solid box use different moves. Tap each card.
🔍
A peek inside
A triangle has a base of 8 cm and a height of 5 cm. Find its area.
area = (base × height) ÷ 2 = (8 × 5) ÷ 2 = 40 ÷ 2
Try this at home: A triangle has base 6 cm and height 4 cm. Area = (6 × 4) ÷ 2 = __
