Kavi Counts the Quarters 🍕

Kavi has one whole pizza and three-quarters of another 🍕. "That's 1 and ¾ — a mixed number," hoots Kavi. "But watch: one whole is 4 quarters, and 3 more makes 7 quarters in all — 7/4! Same pizza, two names."

🎓

What your child will learn

1Four quarters make one wholeShade all 4 parts of the pizza. Four quarters fill the whole circle: 4/4 = 1. This is the key — every whole is made of bottom-number pieces, so a whole pizza in quarters is 4/4.
2One whole plus 3 more quarters = 7/4Now picture the second pizza with only 3 quarters shaded — that's the ¾ in 1¾. Together with the first whole pizza (4 quarters) you have 4 + 3 = 7 quarters: 7/4.
3×then+ one way, ÷with remainder backThere are exactly two moves. Going down to an improper fraction you multiply then add. Coming back to a mixed number you divide — the answer is the whole, the remainder is the new top. Tap each card.

A peek inside

Change the mixed number 2⅓ into an improper fraction.
multiply the whole by the bottom, then add the top: (2×3) + 1 = 7, keep the bottom 3

Try this at home: Mixed → improper: 2½ = __/2 ((2×2)+1, keep the bottom)
