Multiply up to 4-digit by 1-digit and 2-digit by 2-digit (formal written method)
Split a number into its places, multiply each part, then add the partial products — the formal written method scales from 24 × 3 all the way to 1 248 × 8 and 24 × 32.

Kavi's Tall Tower of Numbers 🏗️
Kavi is stacking big numbers to multiply! "A big times a small looks scary," hoots Kavi, "but watch — I break the number into its places, multiply each piece, then stack and add. One column at a time and even 1 248 × 8 falls over like a tower 🏗️!"

What your child will learn
1Split, then multiply each partTo multiply a 2-digit number, split it into tens and ones. Here 14 = 10 + 4. So 14 × 3 becomes 10 × 3 = 30 plus 4 × 3 = 12 → 42. Tap more ▶ and ◀ less to see the two parts.
2Each place gets multiplied in turnThe formal column method multiplies ones, then tens, then hundreds. In 243 that is 3 ones, 4 tens, 2 hundreds. For 243 × 4: 4×3=12 (write 2, carry 1), 4×4=16+1=17 (write 7, carry 1), 4×2=8+1=9 → 972. Build numbers with + and − to feel each place.
3Fast single-digit facts make it quickFormal multiplication leans on your times-table facts. The lit numbers below are the sixes: 6, 12, 18, 24… If 6 × 4 = 24 is instant, then 246 × 4 is just three quick facts stacked in columns.
4Two partial products, then addFor 24 × 32, multiply by the ones and the tens separately: 24 × 2 = 48 and 24 × 30 = 720. The last step of the written method is to add the two partial products. Tap Step → to add 720 + 48 column by column.

A peek inside
Kavi works out 24 × 3 with the grid method.
20 × 3 = 60, 4 × 3 = 12, then 60 + 12
Try this at home: Grid method: 30 × 4 = __ , 2 × 4 = __ , add → 32 × 4 = __
