Kavi's Coordinate Map 🗺️

Kavi draws a grid with two number lines. "The acorn is at (4, 3)!" hoots Kavi. "The first number says how far across I go — to the right ➡️ — and the second says how far up I climb ⬆️. Across first, then up. To reach the next tree I slide right and then slide up — that's a translation. Let's learn to read and move on the grid!"

What your child will learn

1The x-axis, the y-axis and the originA coordinate grid has two number lines. We find a point by its numbers, written together as (x, y) — the x comes first, the y comes second. Tap each part.
2x counts how far acrossThe x-axis is a number line going across from 0. The x-coordinate is simply how many steps you go right ➡️ from the origin. Tap Hop to count across: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4…
3Does the move change x or y?
4(x, y) is not the same as (y, x)Order matters! The point (3, 5) is NOT the same place as (5, 3). Tap each card to check.

A peek inside

A star sits 4 across and 2 up on the grid. Write its coordinates.
x = 4 (across) first, then y = 2 (up): write (x, y)

Try this at home: A point is 3 across and 6 up. Write it as (x, y).
