I can estimate sums, differences and quotients by rounding each number to a friendly round number, then computing quickly in your head.

Kavi's Quick-Check Trick ⚡
At the market Kavi doesn't count every coin! "Watch," hoots Kavi. "I round each number to a friendly one, then add, take away or share in my head — a fast way to see if an answer makes sense ⚡."

What your child will learn
1The nearest thousand signpostWith bigger numbers the easy signposts are the thousands: 0, 1000, 2000, 3000. Every number sits between two thousands — rounding means hop to the closest one. Tap Hop +1000 to travel signpost to signpost.
2Let the hundreds digit decideTo round to the nearest 1000, look at the hundreds digit. Build 4,720: the thousands digit is 4 and the hundreds digit is 7. The hundreds digit decides which thousand we land on.
3Round, then add (or subtract)This is why rounding is so handy. To estimate 4,180 + 2,850, first round each to the nearest 1000: 4,180 → 4,000 and 2,850 → 3,000. Now add the easy thousands. Tap Step → to build 4000 + 3000.
4Share with friendly numbersTo estimate a quotient, round the number being shared to a friendly multiple — one that divides evenly. For 356 ÷ 6, slide up to a friendly multiple of 6: 360. The lit numbers are the multiples of 6, and 360 is 60 sixes, so 360 is easy to divide.
