I can compare bars on a scaled bar graph to find which is greatest or least, how many more, and combined totals.

Kavi's Reading Chart 📊

Kavi made a chart of books read each week, but the bars were so tall they ran off the page! "I'll let every step on the side count by 5," hooted Kavi. Now a bar that reaches the 4th line means 5, 10, 15, 20 books. "On a scaled graph you read the scale first — then you can see which week was biggest, how many more, and the whole total!"

What your child will learn

1Each step counts by 5On a scaled bar graph each line up the side is worth more than one — here every step is 5. Don't count squares one-by-one: read the number on top of each bar. The tallest bar is the greatest, the shortest is the least.
2How many MORE?To find how many more one bar has than another, read both top numbers, then take the small one away from the big one. The gap between the two bar-tops is the difference.
3Add the bars for a totalTo find a combined total, read each bar's number and add them together. The scale does the counting for you — you just add the top numbers.
4Read it like a proEvery scaled bar graph answers the same questions. Step 1 is always the same: read the scale (what is each step worth?). Then compare the top numbers.

A peek inside

A scaled graph (each step = 10) shows 🐶 dogs = 40, 🐱 cats = 60, 🐟 fish = 20. Which pet is the greatest?
read the tops: 40, 60, 20 → biggest is 60

Try this at home: Scale counts by 5. Graph: 🥭 mango — 25, 🍎 apple — 15, 🍐 pear — 20. Which is the GREATEST? __
