I can record and read data in a tally chart and a table, using bundles of five, and find the total.

Kavi Counts the Playground 🛝
Kavi watched who came to the playground. "One mark for each friend!" One stroke, two, three, four — then the fifth stroke slides across to close a bundle of five ||||̸. "Now I count the bundles — five, ten, fifteen — and add the leftovers. A tally chart tells me the total at a glance!"

What your child will learn
1First, collect the dataBefore you can make a tally chart, you collect the data. The rule here is type of vehicle. Tap each one into its box — that is the raw data we will tally next.
2Tally in bundles of fiveA tally is one stroke for each thing: | | | |. The fifth stroke crosses the other four to close a bundle of five — ||||̸ = 5. Bundles make big counts fast: count the bundles five at a time, then add any leftover strokes.
3Record the tally in a tableA table writes each group and its count in tidy rows. Here is the playground data recorded. The bars show the same thing a tally chart would — the taller the bar, the more there are.
4Add the rows to find the totalTo find how many altogether, add every row of the table. Count the bundles of five first, then the leftovers, then add all the groups together.

A peek inside
Kavi's tally for apples reads ||||̸ ||||̸ |. How many apples is that?
two bundles of five + one leftover → 5 + 5 + 1
Try this at home: Read the tally: ||||̸ ||| = __ (count the bundle of five, then the leftovers)
