Kavi's Window Puzzle 🪟

Kavi peers at a window made of a 2×2 grid of little panes 🪟. "One, two, three, four small squares," counts Kavi. Then Kavi grins: "But the four little panes make one big square too — that's 5 squares! And when a shape is a funny L, I can cut it into neat rectangles to find its area. Let's hunt every hidden shape!"

What your child will learn

1Know your shapes before you countBefore counting a tricky picture, name the shapes by their straight sides and corners. A triangle has 3 sides, a square has 4 equal sides, a rectangle has 4 sides (opposite ones equal). Tap each shape to hear its name.
2Parts first, then the wholeA big square cut into a 2×2 grid hides two sizes of square: the little parts and the big whole they make together. Sort each one into the right box.
3Cut an L-shape into rectanglesA funny L-shape is hard to measure in one go — so cut it into neat rectangles, find each area, then add. Imagine an L split into two rectangles. Tap each card.
4Count every square in the gridUse the recipe every time: count the small parts (1, 2, 3, 4), then add the big whole (that's the 5th). Say the running total so you never lose your place.
🔍

A peek inside

A big square is split into a 2×2 grid of small squares 🟦. Count every square.
4 small squares + 1 big whole square → 4 + 1

Try this at home: A big rectangle is split by one line into 2 small rectangles. How many rectangles in all? (parts first, then the whole)
