Kavi Shares the Grapes 🍇
Kavi has 12 grapes 🍇 and wants 3/4 of them. "First I share them into 4 equal piles — that's 3 in each pile," hoots Kavi. "One pile is 1/4. Now I take 3 of the piles: 3 × 3 = 9. So 3/4 of 12 = 9! Divide by the bottom, multiply by the top."

What your child will learn
1The bottom number = how many equal partsA fraction like 1/4 tells you two things. The bottom number (denominator) is how many equal parts to make — here, 4. The top number (numerator) is how many parts you take — here, 1.
2Divide by the bottom: 12 into 4 equal pilesHere are 12 grapes 🍇 shared into 4 equal groups. Tap each group and count with Kavi: every group has the same 3. That is 12 ÷ 4 = 3 — so 1/4 of 12 = 3.
3Multiply by the top: take 3 of the partsNow we want 3/4, so we take 3 of the 4 equal parts. Each part is worth 3 grapes, and we take 3 parts: 3 × 3 = 9.
4Divide by the bottom, multiply by the topFinding a fraction of a quantity is always the same two moves, in order. Tap each card to hear it.
