Equivalent Fractions

Cut each piece into more equal parts and the SHARE stays the same — 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6. Multiply or divide top and bottom by the same number.

Kavi Re-Cuts the Pizza 🍕

Kavi has half a pizza — 1/2 🍕. A friend says, "Cut each piece in two!" Now there are 2 slices out of 4 — 2/4. "Hey," hoots Kavi, "it's the same amount of pizza — just more cuts! 1/2 = 2/4. Fractions that name the same share are equivalent."

What your child will learn

1Start with one halfCut a whole into 2 equal parts and shade 1. That is 1/2 — one half. Keep your eye on how much is shaded; we are about to re-cut it.
2Re-cut it: 2/4 is the SAMENow cut the same whole into 4 equal parts and shade 2. The readout shows 2/4 = 1/2. Same shaded amount — just twice as many cuts! Multiply top ×2 and bottom ×2: 1×2 = 2, 2×2 = 4.
33/6 is the same half tooTake the same whole as a bar in 6 equal parts and shade 3. The readout shows 3/6 = 1/2. Top ×3, bottom ×3: 1×3 = 3, 2×3 = 6.
4Multiply OR divide — same numberThere are exactly two ways to move along the family of equivalent fractions. Both do the same thing to the top and the bottom. Tap each card.

A peek inside

Kavi has 1/2 🍕 and cuts each piece into 3. Write an equivalent fraction.
multiply top and bottom by 3 → 1×3 = 3, 2×3 = 6

Try this at home: Fill in: 1/2 = __/4
