Kavi Fences the Garden 🌱
Kavi is putting a fence all the way around a square garden 🌱. "To know how much fence I need, I walk right around the edge and add every side," hoots Kavi. "The distance around the outside has a special name — the perimeter!"

What your child will learn
1Every side countsThe perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside edge. To find it you must add every side — so first count how many sides there are. A square has 4 equal sides; a rectangle has 4 sides too — two long and two short. Tap each shape.
2Walk around a squareThis square has sides of 4 cm. Start at 0 and tap Hop +4 once for each side you walk along: 4, 8, 12, 16. Four hops of 4 take you right around.
3Add a rectangle's sides tidilyA rectangle is 6 cm long and 4 cm wide. Add one long + one short side first — that is 6 + 4. Tap Step →.
4Square or rectangle? Both perimeters are just all the sides added — but each shape has a fast way. Tap each card.

A peek inside
A square has sides of 5 cm. What is its perimeter?
