Reference-number method for clustered sums
When numbers huddle near a round number, lean on that reference: times it, then nudge up and down by the little differences.

I can add a cluster of close numbers using a reference number.

Kavi's Clustered Coins 🪙
Kavi tips out four little coin stacks: 48, 52, 49, 51 🪙. "These are all crowding around 50," Kavi hoots. "So borrow 50 as a reference — 4 fifties = 200 — then just nudge for the tiny gaps. The ups and downs cancel… 200!"

What your child will learn
1Find the friendly landmarkWhen numbers cluster close together — like 48, 49, 51, 52 — they all live near one round number. Tap Hop +10 to light up the landmarks 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and pick the nearest one as your reference.
2Reference × how manyCount how many numbers are in the cluster. We have 4 numbers, all near 50. So start with 4 × 50. Build it: four fifties make 200 — that is the backbone of the answer before any nudging.
3Nudge up and downEach number is a little above or below 50. 48 is −2, 52 is +2, 49 is −1, 51 is +1. Add those little nudges with fast number bonds — drag the bond to see pairs that cancel.
4Prove it with columnsThe fast way should match the slow way. Here two clustered numbers near 300 — 297 and 303 — added column by column. Tap Step →.

A peek inside
Add the cluster: 48 + 52 🪙.
Reference 50 · 2 numbers → 2 × 50 = 100 · nudges −2 + 2 = 0 · 100 + 0
Try this at home: Reference 50: 48 + 51 + 49 = __ (times the reference, then nudge)
