Kavi's Snack Bar 🍫

Kavi has a long chocolate strip and makes one snip ✂️ — "Look, that made 2 pieces, not 1!" Two snips make 3, three snips make 4. "The pieces are always one more than the cuts!" Then Kavi spots a biscuit tray — a neat grid of rows and columns. "And I never count the squares one by one — I read it in equal rows!"

What your child will learn

1One snip, two piecesTake a strip and make 1 cut — count the pieces: 1, 2. Make 2 cuts — now 3 pieces. Make 3 cuts — 4 pieces. Each new cut adds exactly one more piece.
2Read a grid by rows and columnsA grid is rows going across and columns going up and down. This tray is a tiny grid — 2 rows and 5 columns. Tap Add 5 to fill one whole row of cells at a time.
3The cut rule as a bondFlip the cut rule into a number bond: the cuts plus 1 make the pieces. For a strip with 4 pieces: 3 cuts + 1 = 4 pieces. So pieces = cuts + 1, and cuts = pieces − 1.
4Count the grid in equal hopsA grid of rows of 3 counts just like hopping +3 each time. Start at 0 and hop once per row — watch Kavi land on 3, 6, 9, 12.

A peek inside

Kavi makes 1 cut ✂️ across a chocolate strip. How many pieces are there now?
pieces = cuts + 1 = 1 + 1 · one snip splits one strip into two parts

Try this at home: A ribbon is cut 2 times. How many pieces do you get?
