Kavi's Grown-Up Ruler 📏
Kavi measured a pencil with cubes, then Dad measured it with a shiny ruler marked in centimetres — and they both got the same answer, 9 cm! "Cubes work," said Kavi, "but everyone's cubes are different sizes. A centimetre is always the same, anywhere in the world." These shared sizes are called standard units: cm and m for length, g and kg for mass, and litres for how much a container holds.

What your child will learn
1Read a ruler in centimetresA ruler is marked in centimetres — short, equal units written cm. Line the end of your object up with 0, then read the number at the far end. Hop along to count the cm: 1, 2, 3 …
2Pick the right standard unitSmall amounts use the small unit; big amounts use the big unit. Length: cm for short, m for long. Mass: g for light, kg for heavy. Capacity: litres for how much liquid fits.
3Weigh it in g or kg?Light things are measured in grams (g); heavy things in kilograms (kg). Tap the right box for each.
4How many litres does each hold?Capacity is how much a container holds, measured in litres (L). The taller the bar, the more litres it holds.

A peek inside
Kavi lines a leaf up with 0 on a ruler and the tip reaches the 6. How long is the leaf, and in which unit?
read the number at the end → 6, ruler is in cm
Try this at home: A pencil lines up from 0 to the 8 on a ruler. How long is it? __
