I can skip-count in steps and continue a number pattern by finding its rule.

Kavi's Stepping Stones 🪨

Kavi the owl crosses the river on stepping stones 🪨 — but not one at a time! "I hop in twos: 2, 4, 6, 8…" Then Kavi finds bigger stones: "These are fives! 5, 10, 15, 20!" The secret? Every hop is the same size — that is the rule of the pattern.

What your child will learn

1Hop in equal stepsA number line puts numbers in order. To skip-count, make every hop the same size. Here each hop is +2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 — we skip the numbers in between.
2Count in twosNo pictures now — just know them. The bright numbers are the skip-count in 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 … 20. The dim numbers are the ones we hop over.
3Count in fivesChange the rule and you get a new pattern. Here every hop is +5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 … 50. To find the rule, ask: how big is each jump?
4Count in tensBiggest hops of all: every jump is +10. 10, 20, 30, 40 … 100. To continue any pattern, find the rule first, then add it on again and again.

A peek inside

Each bike 🚲 has 2 wheels. Skip-count the wheels on 4 bikes: 2, 4, 6, __
hop +2 each bike: 2, 4, 6, 8

Try this at home: Count in 2s. Fill the gaps: 2, 4, __, 8, __, 12
