Kavi's Nearest Signpost 🪧
Kavi hops along the river path where every ten has a wooden signpost — 20, 30, 40 🪧. "I'm standing on 43," says Kavi, "which signpost is nearest? 40! So 43 rounds to 40." Now two baskets hold 43 and 28 acorns. "About 40 + 30 — that's roughly 70, quick as a wink!"

What your child will learn
1The nearest signpostThe tens are the big signposts: 0, 10, 20. Every other number sits between two tens. To round to the nearest 10 means hop to the closest signpost. Tap Hop +10 to travel signpost to signpost.
2Let the ones digit decideYou don't need the number line every time. To round to the nearest 10, just look at the ones digit. Build 47: the ones digit is 7. Tap the 1s buttons and watch the ones change.
3Which ten is nearer? The bright numbers are the tens you can land on. Any number in between rounds to its closest bright number: 21, 22, 23, 24 round back to 20; 26, 27, 28, 29 round up to 30.
4Round, then addThis is why rounding is so handy. To estimate 43 + 28, first round each number to the nearest 10: 43 → 40 and 28 → 30. Now add the easy tens. Tap Step → to build 40 + 30.
