Ayu and the Kitchen Mat

Mama Sari has a small mat by the kitchen door. Ayu wants to cover it with square tiles from the market. How many tiles will fill the mat with no empty space? Ayu does not know a fair way to count flat space. By the end I can cover a shape with square tiles and count them to say how much space it covers.

A peek inside

Sari covers a small mat with 2 rows of 4 square tiles. How many squares does it cover?
Predict first: about 8 tiles.
Count row 1: 1, 2, 3, 4.
Count row 2: 5, 6, 7, 8.
4 + 4 = 8, so it covers 8 squares.

Try this at home: Sari covers a small mat with 2 rows of 4 square tiles. How many squares does it cover?
