sort objects by a single criterion (such as colour or shape), and record how many are in each group in a list, table or picture graph

📖
Kavi Tidies the Toy Basket
Kavi's toy basket was a jumble! "Let's sort," said Kavi. "One rule at a time." First by colour — all the red here, all the blue there. "Now I count each group and write it down." When every toy had a home, Kavi smiled: "A tidy sort tells me exactly how many of each — at a glance!"

What your child will learn
1Sort by a criterion (one rule at a time)A criterion is the one rule you sort by. Here the rule is colour. Look at each fruit and tap the box for its colour. Keep to the one rule — don't mix in size or shape yet!
2Record each group in a graphAfter sorting, count each group and record it — in a list, a table, or a picture graph like this. Now anyone can see how many of each without re-sorting.
3Read a record someone else madeOnce a sort is recorded, anyone can read it — no need to sort again. Look at this graph of pets and read it off: which bar is tallest? which is shortest?
🔍
A peek inside
Kavi sorts buttons by shape: 🔺🔺 triangles and 🟦🟦🟦 squares. The rule is 'shape'. How many groups are there, and how many in each?
rule = shape → 2 groups: triangles (2), squares (3)
Try this at home: You sort shapes by colour: 3 red and 2 blue. Write the table: Red — ?, Blue — ?
