Kavi Cleans the Soggy Survey

Kavi's friends ran a survey — but the sheet was a mess: one friend's vote was written twice, another box was blank, and one age said 200! "I can't trust muddled data," Kavi hooted. So Kavi cleaned it first — removed the duplicate, filled the blank, and fixed the impossible 200. Then Kavi analysed it by counting and totalling, and finally wrote a conclusion the numbers really supported: "Apple won the most votes in our class." Kavi did not write "Apple is the best fruit in the world" — the data never said that. "Clean data, honest answer!" Kavi cheered.

What your child will learn

1Clean · Analyse · ConcludeWorking with data has three jobs, in order. First clean it — a dataset full of errors gives wrong answers. Then analyse it — ask the numbers questions. Last, conclude — write only what the data shows, never more. Tap each part to hear its job.
2Turn messy values into tidy onesDirty data hides four common errors. Spot each one and fix it before you count anything. Tap a row to hear the fix.
3Ask the chart questionsOnce the data is clean, you can analyse it. Here are the books borrowed each day this week. The tallest bar is the most; the shortest is the fewest; add them for the total; share the total between the days for the mean.
4Supported conclusion · or overclaim?A conclusion must stay inside the data. If the numbers back it up, it is supported. If it says more than the data shows, it is an overclaim — even if it sounds right.

A peek inside

Kavi's table has this row twice: Ava · 10 · blue. It also shows Age: 200 for one pupil, and one colour is typed as Blue and another as blue. What must Kavi do before analysing?
duplicates double-count · 200 is impossible · 'Blue' and 'blue' should match

Try this at home: Before you analyse a dataset, you must first ____ it (fix the errors).
