Kavi Traces the Robot's Flowchart

Kavi found a flowchart taped to the robot's back — a little map of boxes, diamonds and arrows that tells the robot exactly what to do. "I won't guess where it leads," Kavi hooted. Starting at ▶ START, Kavi followed one arrow at a time — doing each box and answering each diamond with Yes or No — until a single arrow pointed at the answer. "A flowchart never changes its mind," Kavi smiled. "Follow it carefully and you can always predict the result!"

What your child will learn

1The four shapes in every flowchartA flowchart is a map of a plan. The shape of each part tells you its job, and the arrows show the order. Tap each shape to hear what it does — then you can follow any flowchart.
2Follow every arrow to the outputHere is a flowchart for a number machine. Press ▶ Run and do each part in order. At the diamond, answer the question and take the matching arrow — then read the OUTPUT at the end.
3Predict where the flowchart endsYour turn. Read each flowchart, start at START, and follow the arrows — do every box and answer every diamond — until you reach the result. Work it out in your head, then choose and reveal.

A peek inside

A sorting flowchart: INPUT the number 8 → DECISION 'is it even?' → if Yes put it in Box A, if No put it in Box B. Which box does 8 end up in?
start → input 8 → at the diamond, 8 is even, so answer Yes → follow the YES arrow

Try this at home: In a flowchart, which shape asks a Yes/No question and has two arrows coming out of it?
