Kavi Looks Back at Term 2

Term 2 is done, and Kavi curled up with a warm drink to remember it all. "We learned to plan a program as a picture — that's a flowchart, with an oval to start and end, rectangles for actions, a diamond for a yes/no question, and arrows that show the order. We met the operating system — the OS — the manager that starts up first, loads our apps into memory and shares the CPU so many apps run at once. We found out a big message doesn't travel in one go: it is cut into tiny packets that each carry an address and a number, zoom off by different roads, and get put back in order at the end. And we learned to crop, trim and layer to make our media better." Kavi smiled. "Let's look back and lock every idea firmly into our heads."

What your child will learn

1Everything we learned in Term 2Term 2 had four big ideas. Tap each one to remember its job — then you will be ready for the review questions.
2A flowchart is a plan you can followRead a flowchart from the top, following the arrows in order. Each shape has a job. Press Run to walk through this little flowchart step by step.
3Is it the OS's job, or an app's job?The operating system is the manager of the whole computer. Apps do the fun jobs on top. Tap the right box for each one.
4How a big message travelsA big photo is too big to send in one go. The computer cuts it into small packets that each find their own way, then puts them back together. Tap each step to remember the journey.

A peek inside

A flowchart says: START → put number = 7 → ◇ is the number more than 5? → if YES show “Big”, if NO show “Small” → END. Follow the flowchart — what does it show?
the diamond is the decision: is 7 more than 5? 7 > 5 is YES, so follow the YES arrow

Try this at home: In a flowchart, a ____ shape asks a yes/no question.
