Kavi Fixes the Nature-Club Post

Kavi took a photo of a bird and filmed a little stream for the nature club. But the photo had a rubbish bin poking in at the edge, the video wobbled for the first few seconds, and nobody could tell what either one was about. "Straight from the camera is not finished," said Kavi. "I can edit it to make it better." So Kavi cropped the photo — cutting the bin off the edge so only the bird was left. Kavi trimmed the video — cutting the wobbly start away so it began on the smooth part. Then Kavi layered a title on top — the words "Forest Friends" sitting in front of the video without changing the video underneath. "Crop, trim, layer," Kavi hooted. "Three small edits, and my post looks clear and tidy!"

What your child will learn

1Crop, trim, and layerWhen you edit media, you change it to make it better. There are three tools you use most. Tap each one to learn its job — notice that crop works on a picture's edges, trim works on a clip's length, and layer stacks things on top.
2Straight from the camera, or edited?A photo or video straight from the camera is not finished. A few small edits — crop, trim, and layer — make it clearer and tidier. That is what it means to improve your media.
3How Kavi edits the postEditing is a little program — steps in order. You cannot edit media you have not imported yet, and you save your work by exporting it last. Press ▶ Run and watch Kavi crop, trim, and layer the nature-club post.

A peek inside

Kavi's photo of a bird is great, but a rubbish bin pokes in at the left edge. Which tool removes the bin — and what happens to the bird in the middle?
cropping cuts the outer edges away; the subject in the middle is not changed

Try this at home: Cutting the outer edges off a photo to keep the important part is called ____.
