Packets: How Data Travels

Kavi Sends a Big Photo
Kavi wanted to send a huge photo of the whole forest to a friend far away. "It's too big to send in one go," Kavi hooted. So the computer did something clever: it cut the photo into lots of tiny pieces. On each piece it wrote the address of where it was going and a number — piece 1, piece 2, piece 3… — like pages torn from a book. These little labelled pieces are called packets. The packets zoomed off across the internet, and some even took different roads to get there! They arrived all jumbled up, but the friend's computer just read the numbers and put them back in order. "So a big thing travels as many small packets," said Kavi, "and the numbers tell us how to rebuild it. Clever!"
