Kavi Plans a Game Before Building It

Kavi wanted to make a little game app called Tap-the-Star. "I will not start coding yet," said Kavi. "First I make a plan — and a plan is built from just three building blocks." Sequence — the steps in order: set the score, then play the rounds, then show the total. Selection — a choice with IF–THEN: IF the player taps the star in time → add 1. Iteration — a loop that repeats the round 5 times without rewriting it. "Decide what the app is for, then plan the three blocks," Kavi hooted. "A good plan is already half the app!"

What your child will learn

1Plan the goal first, then the three blocksBefore you build an app, you make a plan. Every plan is built from one goal and three building blocks. Tap each one to hear its job.
2The plan for the Tap-the-Star gameHere is Kavi's whole plan. It puts steps in order (sequence), repeats the round (iteration), and makes a choice each round (selection). Press ▶ Run and watch the plan work.
3Plan a pet-care app, part by part
4Does the plan give the right result?A good plan behaves the way you expect. Read each little plan, follow the blocks, and predict what the app does. Reveal to check, then try the next.

A peek inside

You are planning a step-counter app that adds 1 to the total for every step taken. Which building block should your plan use for that part?
doing the same thing again for each step is a repeat

Try this at home: A plan an app follows is built from three building blocks. Name all three.
