Kavi Plans Before Making the Poster

The whole school needed a poster for Family Fun Day. "Before I make anything," said Kavi, "I ask two questions: why am I making it and who is it for?" The purpose was to invite families to come; the audience was busy parents. So Kavi planned first — a quick sketch with the big date, one friendly picture, and only a few words. Then Kavi produced it, checked every choice against those two questions, and pressed Publish. "Plan for your purpose and audience before you make it," Kavi hooted, "and the artefact will do its job."

What your child will learn

1The five things behind a good artefactAn artefact is anything you make — a poster, a slideshow, a web page, a short video. A good one is shaped by five things. Tap each part to hear its job.
2Make it straight away, or plan first? You could start making straight away. But if you decide the purpose and audience and plan FIRST, every choice you make has a reason — so the finished artefact actually does its job.
3How to plan, then produceMaking an artefact is a little program — steps in order. Press ▶ Run and watch Kavi plan first, then produce a poster for the busy parents.
4Does each choice fit THIS artefact? The poster is for busy parents (the audience), to invite them to Family Fun Day (the purpose). Tap the box where each production choice belongs.
