Kavi Looks Back at Term 2

Another term done! Kavi curled up with a cosy blanket to remember it all. "We learned to read a program line by line and say its answer before running it — that's prediction, or tracing. We added a sensor so a program could notice the world and respond — IF the sensor senses it is dark → turn the light ON. We found out that a website lives on a big computer called a server, and our own device — the client — asks it for the page. And we brought words, pictures, sound and video together into one project — that's media, and lots together is multimedia." Kavi smiled. "Let's look back and make sure every idea is firmly in our heads."

What your child will learn

1Everything we learned in Term 2This term had four big ideas. Tap each one to remember its job — then you will be ready for the review questions.
2Trace it, then say the answerTo predict a program's output, read each line in order and keep the number in your head. Follow the value down the lines, then say what it prints. Reveal to check.
3Does it SENSE, or RESPOND?A sensor senses something in the world — like light, heat or movement. Then the program responds by doing something — like turning a light on. Tap the right box for each one.
4One kind of media, or many together? One kind of media on its own can tell people something. But when you bring words, pictures, sound and video together into one project, it comes alive — that is called multimedia.

A peek inside

A variable count starts at 5. The program says: take away 2, then add 4. Trace it — what will it print?
start at 5, then do each line in order: 5 → 3 → 7

Try this at home: Reading a program line by line to work out its answer before running it is called ____.
